In 1829, 200 acres of land was purchased and a poorhouse was built. After falling into disrepair, it was replaced by the current poorhouse in 1864. |

The property contained a powerhouse, heating plant, meat storage, dairy, barn, and a cemetery. This infirmary was known as one of the best conducted institutions of it's kind in the state. Those able to work were required to on the farm. |

In 1873, an insane hall was built to isolate the insane from those living in the poorhouse. The hospital was built in 1936. It provided 3 wards, each containing 10 beds. Patients had to be sent to the Salem City Hospital prior to the construction. |
