Elder House

The Elder Family were among among the earliest settlers in Jefferson Township. In 1806, John Elder Sr. moved from Virginia to Ohio and purchased a large tract of land, which he farmed. John was interested in organizing a church, so he donated a few acres of land for the Jefferson Presbyterian Church to be built on. After John passed away in 1852, his sons, Cyrus and William Elder, inherited the family farm. They split the property two ways. William M. Elder owned the property that this house is located on, so I believe he built it. Cyrus E. Elder served in Company E of the 143rd Regiment Infantry, Ohio National Guard, during the Civil War.
