Construction of the Fayette County Children's Home began in June, 1885, on 100 acres of land that was donated by the late Peter Carder. The administration building was completed in October, 1886. In 1896, a wealthy farmer named Jesse Johnson donated ten thousand dollars to the institution for improvements. The property consisted of 180 acres of valuable land.
