Harrisburg Mill

Joseph Chenoweth built the first sawmill in Darby Township in this exact location. The sawmill burned down in the 1830's. Around 1835, Joseph built this gristmill as a replacement. This was the first gristmill in Darby Township. Water from Big Darby Creek was channeled into a millrace, where it was used to turn a large waterwheel. A.R. Eesley was responsible for the mill's operation. He was able to produce 50 barrels a day. This mill was eventually purchased by John W. Rush and Owen T. Curry. They converted the mill to electric power and installed a roller system. The sandstone foundation was repaired with concrete and wooden supports were added inside.

Joseph Chenoweth was born on September 6, 1798. His parents, Elijah and Rachel Chenoweth, were pioneers of Pleasant Township (Franklin County), settling in 1799. Joseph Chenoweth began in a humble way, but eventually accumulated great wealth and attained high honors. Joseph was noted as a man of spotless character, and of many admirable traits. He was the most extensive and successful stock dealer in Franklin County. Joseph founded the village of Harrisburg in 1836. He owned 1,600 acres of land, which he farmed. Mr. Chenoweth passed away on January 9, 1869.
