Henkle Mill

This mill site was established in 1804 when Capt. Nathan Carpenter built a wood-frame gristmill along the Olentangy River. Around 1846, James Henkle contracted the Jones, Gunn & Co. to construct this limestone woolen mill. This mill manufactured wool blankets and coats for Union Soldiers during the Civil War. This mill prospered even though it only operated for three months each year. In the 1880's, it was converted to steam power and modified to operate as a gristmill. Mr. Henkle lost his leg in a tragic accident inside this mill. The operation ceased shortly after that.
