This tunnel was completed in 1888 for the Cleveland, Akron & Columbus Railroad. Construction actually began years earlier, but a strike forced the delay. This section of the line was known as the Dresden Branch. Passenger service was discontinued on the northern section in 1931. In 1936, the southern section was abandoned, after a flood in 1935 damaged a large percentage of the cut and track. William Noland owned the hill that this tunnel was blasted through. Noland was among the earliest settlers in Bedford Township, settling in 1811. His son, John Noland, owned the adjacent tract of land. The Noland's were dedicated farmers. |
