The Cascade Mills was located near this canal lock. In 1868, Ferdinand Schumacher purchased the mill and invested a small fortune into it. He purchased the best machinery available at the time. The millstones were turned by an iron, overshot waterwheel that measured 36 feet in diameter and weighed 37 tons. The Cascade Race supplied the water. Schumacher's mill was considered one of the finest in the state. It manufactured a superior grade of flour. |
