Webster B. Storer built a boat yard near this canal lock around 1839. Storer and his employees could build 12 boats a year. William J. Payne purchased the boat yard around 1867. Payne continued the operation for 6 years. In 1873, He sold the boat yard and moved his operation to Lock # 2.
