Lock # 17

Photographer: unknown

This canal lock was constructed in 1829 by Mr. Whitaker and Mr. Avery. Shortly after the construction, Frederick Sharpe attempted to found a village called Bevelard. The village grew slowly and became known as Lock Seventeen. John G. Demuth built a warehouse nearby and began shipping grain. John M. Heck built and operated the mill at the canal lock. Heck's Mill prospered throughout the years. The mill was converted to electric power when a roller system was installed. It became known as the Buckeye Roller Mill from then on. Although the canal lock is gone, the mill still stands today.
