The Hill Family were among the earliest settlers in Tuscarawas County. In 1806, Jesse Hill moved to Ohio from Virginia with his wife Mary. Jesse's youngest son, Robert, owned the land that this canal lock was constructed on. Robert was a successful, self made man. He owned 550 acres of excellent land in this area.
