Newcomerstown was founded in 1827 by John Tufford. Around 1836, William Gardner and Paul Roberts built the first gristmill in the village, next to this canal lock. The mill did extensive business during the canal days. In 1853, William H. Craig built a gristmill on the opposite side of the canal. Craig's Mill prospered throughout the years doing custom work.
