This is the only double-lock on the Ohio & Erie Canal. Locks # 26 and # 27 were constructed together. Part of lock # 26 was damaged when the aqueduct was removed. The aqueduct allowed the canal boats to safely cross over the Walhonding River.

In 1879, Pearl Nye was born on a canal boat in Chillicothe. He eventually became a canal boat captain on the Ohio & Erie Canal. After the canal was abandoned, Nye devoted his life to preserving the canal through his songs and stories. In 1939, Captain Pearl Nye built a small house on top of this canal lock. He called it Camp Charming. Prior to that, he lived in a canal boat. Nye truly loved the Ohio & Erie Canal.
