Lock # 11

The Stadden Family were pioneers of the Licking Valley. In the spring of 1800, Isaac Stadden and his brother, Col. John Stadden, traveled from Pennsylvania to Ohio. The Stadden Brothers purchased land, built cabins, and planted crops. In September, Isaac sent a wagon back to Pennsylvania for his wife, Catharine Stadden, and their two children. Around December, Isaac discovered an Indian fort while hunting deer in the Cherry Valley. Isaac was a skilled carpenter, and the tools he brought with him to the county were of a great convenience to the neighborhood. He built the first known mill in the county. It was a hand operated mill that was used to grind grains for his family and friends. Isaac started the first nursery in the county in partnership with John Goldthwaite. Their orchard of fruit trees was very successful and bountiful. In 1802, Isaac was elected as the first Justice of the Peace in Licking County. In 1808, John Stadden was elected as the first Sheriff in Licking County.
