This rarely seen canal lock is hidden deep within the Black Hand Gorge. This is where the canal entered the Licking River. The Black Hand Gorge was too rugged to construct the canal through it, so the Licking River was used. A dam created a slack water, which allowed the canal boats to safely travel down the river. A sandstone ledge was constructed beneath the Black Hand Rock so the leader and the mules pulling the canal boats could pass by.
