The small village of Rushtown was founded by Levi Kirkenhall. It was named after one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Rush. Rush signed the Declaration of Independence. He is also well known for reconciling the friendship between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Large quantities of timber were shipped from Rushtown each year on canal boats. Brown's Mill was located near this canal lock.
