On November 24, 1834, a prominent, local lawyer named Wlderkin Potter performed the ground breaking ceremony of the Sandy & Beaver Canal. Hundreds of people gathered near the Rebecca Furnace to witness the event. A financial panic in 1837 caused the construction to cease. The canal wasn't completed until 1848. The Sandy & Beaver Canal never met the builder's expectations, nor was the full potential ever seen, due to structural problems. The canal was completely abandoned by 1854. The Sandy & Beaver Canal was roughly 73 miles long with 90 lift locks, several guard locks, 1 aqueduct, and 2 tunnels. The canal was divided into 3 sections: Western, Middle, and Eastern. The Western Division is the section from Bolivar to Kensington, it contained 33 lift locks. The Middle Division is the section from Kensington to Lockbridge, it contained no lift locks, but the 2 tunnels were located within this section. The Eastern Division is the section from Lockbridge to Glasgow, PA, it contained 57 lift locks. |
