Stratton Mill

This flour mill was partially built in 1877 by John F. Stratton. The stone used in the construction was hauled on site after a nearby hill had a railroad tunnel blasted through it. John set up the mill to run on a steam engine. Unfortunately, John died in 1878 of typhoid fever. His brother, Charles, and his brother-in-law, Joseph Branson, completed the mill. At only 14 years of age, John's son, George W., began working in the mill. By 1896, he was solely responsible for the milling operation. In 1906, George replaced the steam engine with a 50 horsepower electric motor, which proved to be too expensive to run. In 1937, he installed a 50 horsepower diesel engine. George successfully operated the mill, producing an excellent quality of flour, up until 1959. His son, William, took over the operation after he retired. William operated the mill into the early 1960's, when the operation ceased.
