Wiest House

John Gilbert Wiest was born on March 24, 1855. His parents were Christopher and Mary Wiest. John learned to farm early in life by working on his father's farm. Although he only attended 3 months of school, he was a smart, self-educated man. His knowledge was obtained through observation, reading, and studying.

In 1875, John married Emma Swinehart. The couple had 3 children: Daisy Mae, Maud, and Alvador. In 1908, he purchased 119 acres of fine land. He improved the property throughout the years and successfully engaged in farming and stock-raising. John grew corn, wheat, oats, and hay. He also regularly kept 350 hogs, 300 sheep, 60 head of cattle, and 15 horses. The animals he raised commanded high prices at the local markets.

"His influence is ever on the side of right and progress and his labors have therefore been a force in the county's advancement."

John was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows, Knights of the Pythias, and the Maccabees. He also served 5 years as the Pitt Township Trustee and 13 years as the Treasurer of the local school board.
